Episode 4: How Mentoring in the Church Differs from Corporate America

Show Notes

Today we continued our interview with Dr. Tom Johnston. Near the end of the podcast, I gave a list comparing the rabbinical and western approaches to mentoring and education. That list is taken from Mentored Ministry: The Rabbinical Way of Jesus, a training on mentored ministry by Tom Johnston and Mike Chong Perkinson, Manchester NH: The Praxis Center for Church Development, 2012, p. 4. I highly recommend the mentor training provided by the Praxis Center, you can contact them for more information at (603) 518-5007.

Tom Johnston is the pastor of Trinity Life Community in Bedford NH. He’s also the Co-founder and Executive Director of the Praxis Center for Church Development, and President and Chief Educationist of the Trivium Institute.

Tom recommends two resources for you on our topic:

The Organic Reformation: A New Hope for the Church in the West by Tom Johnston and Mike Chong Perkinson – This book details the shift in the Church that must take place – and is already underway! The authors boldly advocate for a new reformation – a returning back to the simple teaching of Jesus – that will release again the revolutionary fire of the Church unleashed!

The Way of the Master: The Rabbinical Process of Jesus as an Adult Integrated Learning Methodology by Thomas Brian Johnston – An educational perspective on the rabbinic mentoring process of Jesus as applied to integrated learning. The thesis has a focus on establishing the principles and skill-sets embodied in the ministry of Jesus.

Many pastors realize the need for a consistent mentoring relationship after they are already suffering burnout or other problems in ministry.
